about

nestorm is built around a five act structure, not in terms of narrative but in terms of form, tension, and release. The tracks are inter-related in a variety of ways: in some cases through the compositional devices, in others through the lyrical and emotional material. Though made up of 5 stand alone pieces, the album is meant to be listened to in one sitting. The individual pieces are linked through the text of the sestina ‘nestorm’ which mimics the five-act structure.

nestorm

i.
With wind and rain came a storm
Seen from afar it descends as a spiral
Losing its becoming until it is gone
But just before, a dot shows it is present
And the dot is the beginning of a line
That drops until it becomes part of a nest

I.
Walls and doors and light at night form a nest
And clouds and wind and rain and cold the storm
Between the two the ever valued line
Just as much a stick of this home’s spiral
One without the other would not be present
The other without one would not be gone

II.
And the next day, when wind and rain are gone
I collect sticks to strengthen our nest
Call them a present
Right now there is no storm
But I think we may be in the eye’s spiral
So let’s take our sticks and build our line

III.
Because we know one night may break our line
And the doors open and the walls and light be gone
And from the center outwards works the spiral
And the edges elide with the sticks of the nest
And become one very great big storm
Until all is one present

IV.
Then I’ll bring you again a present
We’ll encircle ourselves with lines.
Though right now there is no storm
It is, I think, never truly gone
Because then we would not need our nest
Surrounded by sticks in a spiral

V.
Life is different as a spiral
Dots are not the present
It is like all the parts of a nest
Made up of line after line after line
Someday it is and is not gone
Ascending upwards into the storm

c.
We lose the spiral for the line
And our present attempt is gone
To apprehend that the nest is also a storm
